damage from animals
During Winter, pests and critters search for a warm place to call home. Unfortunately, trees are often their chosen destination. Due to the lack of nourishment, branches and trunks are nibbled on creating weak points within the tree.
Frost can crack A trunk
Many trees, Oak trees especially, are prone to frost-induced "shakes," which are cracks developed due to rapid shifts between day and night temperatures. The outer layer of the trunk contracts faster than its inner counterpart, leading the tree trunks to crack and weaken.
Winter burn on Tree tips
Winter burn is a common issue for trees and other plants during Winter. It's indicated by green needles or tree tips turning brown, caused by the combination of water loss, sun damage and drying winds. When temperatures change suddenly, this condition can become worse.
Damage to the Trees
Storms can be particularly devastating to even the healthiest of trees, bringing strong winds and heavy snow and/or ice that break branches and potentially cause them to fall on structures. Shallow-rooted trees in particular are susceptible to fail with Spring showers loosening the soil.
Sudden change in TEMPERATURE
The worst thing a tree can face in the Winter is a sudden shift between hot and cold temperatures. Trees are particularly vulnerable in the winter to sudden temperature shifts, as this can disrupt their dormancy process. Without a consistent decrease in temperatures during these months, there may be an increased risk of harm if followed by periods of mild weather.
